How Much Does a Recording Studio Cost?

First of all, you need to process your room in order to make the sound quality better. Remember, a normal room or your basement was not built for sound recording and therefore will need some work before it can be converted into a good recording studio. You can purchase good quality acoustic foam and stick them on walls by yourself. One case of foam will cost anything between and 0. You may need around 7 cases for a 10'X10' room. You can also take help of professionals and make the room soundproof. This is an additional cost that you can undertake if you want to render a high-quality, professional service. For a low budget studio, you can start much cheaper. There are many ways to improve room acoustics cheaply or for free. These ideas will be discussed in another article.

Hardware and software

Among the hardware equipment, you will need a computer, a soundboard, an interface, and a good microphone with a stand and microphone cable. The whole microphone set may cost you around 0 or less for a decent one. You can also get a MIDI keyboard, which will cost around 0 for a cheap starter keyboard. You will also need digital recording software, which may cost anything between 0 and 0. If you want something free, I recommend Audacity. Do a Google search, and you'll find it easily.

Musical equipment

It is advisable to keep a few pieces of musical equipment handy, in case your customers need to borrow something. This happens quite a bit. If you already have a guitar or any other instrument of your own, keep them in the studio. You may not need to invest in new musical instruments if you don't have much room in your budget for this. You can also consider investing into a few second hand instruments that are in good condition. Mostly, bands just want to have options in the studio. If you have some old beat up guitars, amps, and effects lying around, they are happy to tinker with them. This also increases the value of your studio, which helps you command a higher fee for your services.

How to Convert Negatives and Slides to Digital Photos

How to Convert Negatives and Slides to Digital Photos

If you've been an amateur photographer for any length of time then odds are you've got stacks of slides and/or negatives laying around. It probably time to look into converting those to digital pictures. So if you are looking to convert your slides to digital pictures you have a few options.

How to Convert Negatives and Slides to Digital Photos

1. Do It Yourself, the Hard Way

You'll need a digital camera, a light box and a tripod for this. But if you have all three then this is probably the route for you. Just setup your digital camera on the tripod, place a slide on the lightbox, zoom in tight with your camera and shoot. Then you can shoot each of your slides, save them to your computer, do a little cropping to eliminate each slide's white border and you're done.

2. Do It Yourself, the Easy Way

Probably the easiest way to convert your slides to digital pictures yourself is to buy an off-the-shelf slide to digital picture converter. Yes, these do exist and they don't cost as much as you might think.

You just load a slide or negative into the machine, press a button and a high resolution digital picture is made. The process is quick and fairly painless.

Plus, with a slide to digital picture converter you control the end product. If you don't like how one of the conversions looks, just do it again.

3. Hire Someone Else to Convert the Slides

One final option that you have is to hire someone else to convert the slides for you. If you just don't have time to do it yourself then by all means try to find a company that can do it for you. This is the most expensive of the three options but you won't have to invest any of you time and you'll get all of your slides and negatives converted.

Panasonic DVD Recorders with Tuner

Panasonic DVD Recorders with Tuner

Panasonic DMR-EZ48VP-K 1080p Upconverting VHS DVD Recorder with Built In Tuner

Finally a DVD recorder that actually works and is pretty easy to operate. Thus far I have tried recording from VHS to DVD several times with out any problems. One just can not beat the two button recording sequence. You press the specified VHS->DVD record button located on the front of the unit then you either press the record button to play until the DVD is maxed out and finalize the recording automatically or the play button that will allow you to stop the recording, finalize at a later time, add VHS content from another VHS tape, etc. My pops that is not tech savvy at all has managed to work the unit. He is smiling that he can now convert his 20 year old VHS tapes to DVD

A must have is DVD-RAM discs. Allows one to tape broadcast content to view at a later time then delete and record again. Panasonic DVD Recorders with Tuner  I am still trying to find a PC program that will allow me to take DVD-RAM content and edit it on a PC. I have tried Adobe Premiere without any results (does not recognize the file format. If anyone knows please advise.

Update 11/21/2008 After many months of use I can say that the unit has worked very well for the purpose that we purchased it: Transferring homemade VHS tapes to DVD. First the footage is transferred to a DVD-RAM disc. Panasonic DVD Recorders with Tuner (I purchased a pack of 5 and have only used 2 that still work). I have used with great success the authoring software called: TMPGEnc Authoring Works. It allowed me to take the raw unedited footage that was transfered from the VHS to the DVD-RAM disc then using TMPGEnc Authoring Works to edit footage and then burn it on a regular DVD.

It is also a decent VHS and DVD player.
